My guess would be the expanse of mostly-empty shell above and below the cylinder increases the moment of the blaster and makes it feel both larger and lighter than it really is. The blaster manages to be more narrow than the Hammershot, despite the added capacity, but is so tall and long that it no longer feels like a pistol.ĭespite the few similarities between the Hammerstorm and the rest of the Alpha Strike line, the blaster still manages to feel cheap in the hand. A top rail is also present, as is an N-Strike barrel attachment lug. The blaster is larger than necessary, the excess of plastic mostly around the bottom of the body to make room for some poor dart storage and a lower rail. The painting is limited to one side of the blaster, which feels cheap but is unfortunately not a cost-savings move exclusive to Alpha Strike. When compared to other N-Strike or Zombie Strike blasters, the plastic seems of similar quality. The shell is screwed together rather than held together with clips, the grip and frame lack the "skeletonized" design common to Alpha Strike, and the trigger is a comfortable N-Strike shape. The loading area for the darts is clear of obstructions and general handling of the blaster does not reveal any points where operation of the blaster is hindered by the design.ĭespite being marketed as an "Alpha Strike" blaster, the Hammerstorm lacks many of the signifying manufacturing compromises found in the rest of the Alpha Strike line. Grip is well-proportioned for adult hands, but angled slightly more than I find comfortable. Darts are easy to load, retention is good, and there were no mechanical issues during my time with the blaster. Cylinder rotation is smooth, trigger has a little unexpected friction that creates more noise than I normally expect in a Nerf product but nothing that impedes function. The priming action is smooth with a reasonable draw weight.
The Hammerstorm has an 8-dart capacity in a cylinder similar to the Hammershot. After testing it out for a couple days I find it confusing and irksome in unexpected ways: The two reviews I found were generally positive in comparing it to the Hammershot and the price was reasonable so I ordered one from Target. I have found it frustrating to see availability of Hammershots decreasing but was pleasantly surprised when a new successor to the blaster appeared online. It is fun to use, feels great in the (adult size) hand, and performs flawlessly. The ability to use it one-handed is essential as a back-up to a "main" blaster with higher capacity and rate of fire.
